Somehow we still managed to conduct a healing and two Dharma talks. One in the little town of Medina at Rx Yoga and one at a meditation retreat led by Venerable Ani Palmo Rybicki. She was leading a three day Vispassana meditation retreat and had Venerable Geshe Norbu give a talk on the benefits of meditation. She is wonderful and so were her students. They all had great questions and were radiating from their retreat.

October 5th – Sunday was a busy day for us. First Venerable Geshe Norbu gave a talk at the Jewel Heart Dharma Center in Cleveland on the Four Noble Truths, then we made a mad dash out to the beautiful town of Ashtaubula to give a talk on Creating Happiness in your Life. The wonderful people at Ashtabula’s Wellness Center organized our visit and it was hosted by the kind people at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The church has a lot of history, if you get a chance check out the parish history on their website. Father David opened his church up to us for free. Susan, Andy, and Grace from the Wellness Center brought a large, very engaged crowd and Rodger and his daughter made sure everything ran smoothly. We really loved our visit their and are grateful for all their kindness.

October 7th – Tuesday night we did a cultural presentation at the Grand River Academy. The academy is a boys boarding school with students from all over the world. Established in 1831, it also has a great history and beautiful grounds. It was great for me to be at a high school again, reminiscing about my students back in Long Beach. We had dinner with them and they were all so interested it was great. They had so many questions we could have talked all night.

October 8th – Wednesday was a very special treat for us. We were invited over to dinner at Chunden’s house. She is a local tibet and one of the first voices for Radio Free Tibet. It is always a special treat for the monks to have Tibetan cooking and company. The Tibetans are incredibly polite and generous and take great care of their guests. This means lots, and I mean lots, of food. They just keep bringing it against all of your protests. Again another late night with good friends and good food =).

October 9th – Thursday night we were back at Jewel Heart to do Tsog and a talk on the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination. The place filled with a lot of great energy and Venerable Geshe Norbu gave an amazing talk. There was great buzz filling the space and everyone kept visiting long after the talk. As it was getting very late, we finally piled back into the van and headed back home.

October 11th – Saturday we hosted by the very kind and talented artist, Beth Wolfe, and the curators of the Asterisk Gallery. There was great turnout for our Chay Droy ritual – one in which the Lama, in the form of Tara, removes and purifies obstacles from people’s lives. The current exhibit deals with the last eight years in the USA and featured art as political dissent. So the energy in the room was initially pretty intense and provocative. However, during the ritual, Ven. Geshe Norbu transformed the space, the people, and all the collective energy into a healing, purified, and wonderful clear space. It was great and we met so many really kind, thoughtful people. Among them was Ren, a very gentle spirit with an incredible talent for photography. He was kind enough to email me so photos and will post them in the gallery below.

October 12 -Tomorrow we are headed off to Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA. We finished off our visit today with two events. First we did a 21Tara Puja at RX Yoga where we had a nice little group. Then we went to the Unity Church of Greater Cleveland to do a demonstration and monastic debate, followed by a Dharma talk on karma. The debate session was great and very lively with Venerables Phuntsok and Yeshe taking on Ven. Geshe Kalsang. Venerable Geshe Norbu followed with a talk explaining Karma allowing a lot of time for questions and discussion. We really enjoyed our time there and want to extend a special thanks to Rudi, Vivian, and Reverend Joan for their kindness in opening up their church to us.

We also want to express our immeasurable gratitude to Bill and Susie for all their efforts, kindness and generosity in making our visit to the Cleveland possible. In the morning we are off to a new adventure in New Wilmington.

Seven Tibetan Buddhist monks from India’s Gaden Shartse Monastery have been touring the nation, including a stop in northwest Ohio this week, and say they keep running into the same problem everywhere they go: “No one wants us to leave. They say, ‘Stay here, we’ll find a house for you to live in. Stay in our city,’” Lobsang Wangchuk said. “We’ve had this happen over and over again.”

The reason, he said, is that Americans are intrigued by the monks’ peaceful countenance and want to experience the same kind of tranquility and happiness.

Teaching Westerners how to find peace, harmony, and understanding is one of the reasons the Buddhist monks have been trekking across the United States since November, with another eight months scheduled on their current tour.

The two other primary reasons for the U.S. tour, Lobsang Wangchuk said, are to demonstrate Buddhist art and to raise funds for a newly opened hospital the monks built in southern India.

In an interview at a spacious Maumee home where the group has been staying, Lobsang Wangchuk said one thing the monks do not try to do is convert people to Buddhism.

“We see all religions as having the same purpose. We always try to harmonize with other religions. We never try to convert anybody,” said Lobsang Wangchuk, wearing the monks’ familiar maroon-and-saffron robes. 

Geshe Jampa Norbu, one of the tour’s two main teachers, sat cross-legged on a wooden dining room chair during the Wednesday morning interview, offering comments in Tibetan that were translated by Lobsang Wangchuk or another monk, Tenzin Lobsang. 

Several other monks milled about, eating breakfasts of cereal and jam-covered toast or heading out for walks along the Maumee River.

“Geshe says over and over again that maybe it’s better that you stay with your own religion,” Lobsang Wangchuk said, “and if Buddhism helps you understand your religion, then integrate some of the principles into your religion to help you understand it better.

“It’s almost like we’re a shopping mall: Whatever you like, you take with you. And what you don’t like, leave behind. If we can help you, wonderful. But we don’t try to convert people to Buddhism.”

The Gaden Shartse Monastery was founded in Lhasa, Tibet, in 1416 and at one time housed 5,000 monks. The monastery was destroyed during the Chinese takeover of Tibet in the 1950s, when many Tibetans fled to India.

The Shartse monks built a monastery in exile in 1969 and now have more than 1,000 monks at their facility in Karnataka State, in southern India.

“India has been very kind to us,” said Lobsang Wangchuk, a native of Southern California. “The Indians have given us a place to stay until maybe, perhaps someday, Tibet is free.”

The 66-year-old monk, with shaved head and light brown eyes, said he began studying with Shartse monks in 1979. He saw a Buddhist teacher appear to him in a dream, he said, and the teacher later knocked on his door. 

The monks are grateful to the Indians for letting them practice their religion freely, Lobsang Wangchuk said, and that is why they built a hospital. While the facility recently opened, the monks are looking for more doctors and nurses to staff it and more funds to equip it.

“We want to return the kindness to India as much as possible, so we hope to provide free medical care. There are numerous poor villages around us where people have no money to ever see a doctor,” Lobsang Wangchuk said.

Interest and awareness in Buddhism in the United States has been growing since he first began heading up the Tibetan monks’ tours nearly 20 years, he said.

Americans note that monks own only the most basic essentials, such as their robes, tea cups, spoons, and books, yet they appear to have inner peace and harmony. Meanwhile, he said, the material wealth of most Americans rarely leads to fulfillment.

“In our travels, we see that in India it is very difficult,” Lobsang Wangchuk said. “But here, we have all the facilities — hospitals, good roads, easy access to food, supermarkets. But there seems to be a lack of happiness in the West, a lack of peace. So we feel that we can help with this.

He said Geshe Jampa Norbu, who is making his first U.S. tour, is a highly respected Tibetan Buddhist teacher and a two-time valedictorian. The other primary teacher on the U.S. tour is Geshe Kalsang Gyatso, a chanting master.

Geshe Jampa Norbu said through an interpreter that the current economic problems in the United States are making many Americans re-evaluate their priorities, which could bring positive results.

“If a recession or a depression comes, then either there will be anarchy, or people will turn inward,” Geshe Jampa Norbu said. “People will seek some sort of teaching, which all religions hold, that there are ways of transforming the mind and showing them that happiness is an internal event. It is not an external thing based on possession and objects.”

The 42-year-old Buddhist teacher was born in Tibet, where he studied for almost 22 years in Lhasa before fleeing to India in the 1980s during a brief period when China relaxed travel restrictions. 

Geshe Jampa Norbu studied for a total of 25 years before receiving his Geshe degree, then studied further at the Gyuto Tantric College in northeast India. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama gave him full ordination vows in 1988.

“To be given permission to teach, it takes about 30 years of study” Lobsang Wangchuck said, “and that’s six days a week, from 5 a.m. to midnight. So it’s a real intense program and it produces a very unusual type of human being.”

The monks’ Toledo visit has included personal and group spiritual healings, empowerments, and house and business blessings; a public lecture Thursday night on “World Peace and the Unity of All Religions,” and a Chenrezig 
Empowerment blessing, intended to help people become more peaceful and compassionate, at a local yoga center last night.

The monks will create a sand mandala today to honor the Medicine Buddha starting at 10 a.m. at St. Ann Mercy Hospital’s Cancer Center, 3404 West Sylvania Ave. The event is free and open to the public.

Our first stop was at the Blanchard Valley Hospital. The hospital hosted us to lunch and gave us a tour their incredible facility. It is truly a state of the art hospital with all the technology and a kind and nurturing staff. It really showed that these people care.

Next we were off to our new home for the next three days – A Boy Scout Camp called Camp Berry. We got to stay in a big lodge with a huge fireplace surrounded by woods. There was even a bed for every monk!

Day two included a trip to Bluffton University. This is a Mennonite university with an emphasis on peace. Throughout the campus they have many monuments to peace. We received a tour of the Lion and the Lamb Peace Center and visited with a group there. Then we were off to the Art Department to do a sand mandala demonstration. Later that night we hosted an “Evening with the Monks” out at Camp Berry. People came from up to an hour away. We built a big fire and sat around in a circle sharing stories and answering questions about Buddhism and Tibet for hours. It was quite nice.

On Thursday evening we were invited to speak at the Unitarian Church. The place filled up and the people were great – asking many questions and very engaged. Venerable Geshe Norbu gave a wonderful talk on the “Compassionate Practices of Buddhism.”

Over the weekend we worked on a sand mandala at the Findlay Municipal Building. This was sponsored to help Findlay heal from a devastating flood they are recovering from. We worked on it throughout the day on Saturday and put the finishing touches to it on Sunday morning. The dissolution of took place at 1:00 in the afternoon. The Mayor, along with a large group from the community came out and even walked with us down Main Street to put the sand in the river. Everything went well and we even got a special surprise when Tina, Michael, and Robert showed up from Toledo.

This was a great day. We got to visit the Victory Center and do a blessing there. These people are dedicated to providing a wide range of support services to people going through cancer treatment. Everyone we met there was clearly passionate about their own personal commitment to truly help meet the needs of their clients. After the blessing they provided lunch and we got to spent some quality time with them. Once again, the precious Tina funded this special event. Thank you so much Tina for all your help.

This being our last night, the organizers came over for a final farewell.  We would like to thank them for all their, time, energy, kindness, and generosity.  Thank you so much Paula, Tina, Michael, Robert, Ben, Rhonda, and Matty for helping make our visit to Toldeo so successful in raising funds for our monastery.

September 14th – We had a nice break today went up to Robert’s house for a bar-b-que. He, his wife Stephanie, and their children (Nicholas and Maya), live out in the country. They have a great house built by Stephanie’s grandfather right on Otter Creek in Michigan. We meet many new friends, had great food, did a house blessing, then we were off to Tobie and Bob’s. By now it was pouring rain as we found our way to Tobie and Bob’s. Once there we found a warm and wonderful home filled with great people to greet us. We did a house blessing, had a great meal, and spent a couple of hours telling stories and playing with the children. The time flew by before we knew it as we had such a great time.

September 13th – Today we are at the Mercy Cancer Center at St. Anne’s creating a one day sand mandala of the Medicine Buddha to bless this new center.

September 12, 2008 – After a day of personal healings, the group headed over to the Integration Yoga Center to conduct a Chenrezig Empowerment. Jenn McCullough was kind enough to open up her studio to us and the place was quickly packed. It turned out to be just the right size to fit everyone.

September 11, 2008 – Once again we find ourselves in a wonderful home experiencing the kindness of strangers. This time our new friend Ben and his son Matty were kind enough to open up their home to us. His friend Rhonda has also come to the rescue to help make sure all are happy and comfortable. Ben has an amazing home in Maumee right on the Maumee river. The backyard leads through a little forrest and then to the river. Every morning and evening we are able to see deer wandering through the yard. They are very tame and will even let you get within 5 feet.

Last night Ben and Rhonda hosted a dinner with the monks and we met quite a few new friends. Venerable Lobsang held court in the living room with all gathered around as he entertained them with numerous stories that lasted into the night. Ben also had a bonfire in the backyard where we toasted marshmellows.

Today we visited to colleges – Owens Community College and University of Toledo. At both schools we did cultural presentations and answers questions from the students. All were very engaged and asked great questions.

Tonight we did a lecture on world peace and the unity of all religions. This is an excellent topic on the anniversary of September 11. Geshe Norbu and Venerable Lobsang gave a great talk and we had an impressive turnout. I was so happy to see so many people coming out to share in a discussion about world peace and unity. Some even brought their children. We also had visitors all the way from Norman, Oklahoma – our dear friends Wiley and Marial. They flew up to spend some time with us and take part in our schedule of events.
